Kaizer Chiefs’ match against Chippa United on Saturday ended the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season, but the match marked the beginning of what promises to be a bright future for Takalani Mazhamba, who made his senior bow in goal for Amakhosi at the Moses Mabhida stadium.

The 18-year-old has come through the Club’s youth ranks and realised the dream of every youth development academy starlet by making it all the way to the First XI.

Speaking exclusively to www.kaizerchiefs.com, Mazhamba says, “I’m a boy from a village in Venda who grew up in Soweto. That’s where I started playing football. I joined Kaizer Chiefs when I was 13 and today I made my debut for the senior team. To be honest, I am so happy and grateful. I really appreciate the opportunity that the Kaizer Chiefs Family have given me.”

After being noticed by the coaching staff for his commanding performances for the reserves in the national U23 DStv Diski Challenge (DDC), Mazhamba was called up to train with the senior squad, an invitation for which the young shot-stopper is very grateful.

“Training with the First Team has been a great benefit for me,” he reveals, “I have learned a lot from the likes of Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma and Fiacre Ntwari, who have all been teaching me, giving me little tips to improve my goalkeeping.”

Despite his tender years, Mazhamba’s innate self-belief convinced the coaches that he has the maturity and temperament to cope with the demands of top-flight football and therefore make him the youngest ‘keeper to debut for Chiefs in the PSL era.

“When I was told I would start I was a bit nervous, this being my first call to step onto the big stage,” he admits before adding, “I thought to myself that I have been doing this for seven years and it’s just another match and I must produce my A-game. The cheers I got from the supporters when I took to the field immediately gave me confidence to think, ‘Boy, you can do this, the fans are with you. Just play your game and enjoy it’.”

Unfortunately, Mazhamba’s introduction to the big-time ended in a disappointing 1-0 defeat, yet Mazhamba demonstrated his abilities with some fine goalkeeping over the 90 minutes, including an excellent point-blank save to deny Sirgio Kammies in the second half.

“No goalkeeper accepts conceding goals so I am not happy with that,” he admits, “But we take it, we grow from it and keep moving forward from there.”

Along with many of his teammates, Mazhamba will recharge with some down-time next month before returning in July to begin preparations for the next campaign.

“My ambition is to play more next season,” he states. “In the off-season I’ll be supporting Bafana Bafana in the World Cup and then look forward to training hard in pre-season.”

Mazhamba’s remarkable rise is an example of his dedication and determination to reach the top, and it also illuminates the outstanding work being done to nurture and develop the talent in the Club’s youth structures by the coaching and technical staff within the academy.
